Optical or AirPlay to a Sonos from a Mac?
Two ways to get sound from a Mac to a Sonos speaker: down an optical cable, or across your network over AirPlay. Most comparisons of the two are argued on sound quality, and that is the wrong argument. AirPlay 2 is lossless. The real difference is time.
Why does AirPlay audio lag behind the video?
Any audio sent over a network has to be buffered. A wireless network does not deliver packets at a steady rate — it shares the air with your neighbours, your microwave and everything else on your own Wi-Fi — so the receiving speaker holds a reserve of audio and plays out of that, smoothing over the gaps. Without it you would hear every hesitation as a dropout.
That reserve is delay. It is not a bug and it is not badly implemented; it is the mechanism, and it is why AirPlay is reliable. It is also why the sound arrives after the picture.
For an album this does not matter at all — nothing on screen is waiting for it. For anything with a face in it, it matters enormously. Once you have noticed lips landing before the words, you cannot stop noticing it.
There is no setting for it. A player that controls both halves can shift the picture to match, and some do. Anything live — a call, a game, scrubbing a timeline you are cutting — cannot.
AirPlay is not the lossy option
This is worth stating flatly, because it is the most common thing said wrongly about it. AirPlay 2 carries ALAC — Apple Lossless. It is not Bluetooth. It is not re-encoding your music into something smaller and throwing part of it away. Bit for bit, what arrives at the speaker is what left your Mac.
So if you are choosing a cable to protect the resolution of the audio, the reasoning does not hold up. Choose the cable because of when the sound arrives, not what it is made of.
What AirPlay is genuinely better at
Nothing to buy
No cable, no adapter, no port. Most current Macs have no optical output at all, so going wired usually means buying hardware before you hear anything.
It follows you
A laptop on the couch is still connected. A cable ties the sound to one desk, and unplugging is a decision you make several times a day.
More than one room
Grouping speakers is the thing Sonos is for, and a wired input feeds one speaker. Over the network you can send the same audio to the whole house.
The volume keys already work
macOS knows the speaker is there, so it carries the level for you. Nothing to install and nothing to configure.
What the cable buys
Sound that lands with the picture
There is no buffer worth the name, because there is no network to survive. This is the whole reason to run a cable, and it is not a preference — it is measurable, and you can hear it in ten seconds of anything with dialogue.
Nothing to reconnect
A cable does not drop out when someone starts a backup, does not need to be selected again after a sleep, and does not care how busy the 5 GHz band is.
Linear PCM, straight through
TOSLINK carries the same samples your Mac produced. AirPlay arrives intact too — this one is a tie, not a win, and it is fairer to say so.
No permissions, no discovery
It works when the network is down, on a guest network, on a different subnet, and on a Mac with Wi-Fi switched off entirely.
So which should you use?
The honest split is by what you do with the Mac, not by what you think of wireless audio.
- Music, podcasts, radio, background sound, more than one room — use AirPlay. It is lossless, the volume keys work, and the delay costs you nothing because nothing on screen is waiting.
- Films, video calls, games, editing, anything with a picture — use the cable. This is the case wireless cannot win, and no amount of tuning the network changes it.
- Both, at different times — very common on a desk. Optically ties the volume keys to one output, so switching your Mac between the cable and something else hands them back and forth on their own.
The catch with the cable
Optical carries audio one way and nothing else. No return channel, no volume command. So the moment you plug one in, your Mac’s volume keys stop working — macOS does not know a speaker is on the far end, and has nothing to turn down.
That trade is why a lot of people try the cable, hear the improvement, get tired of reaching for their phone, and go back to wireless. Why the volume keys stop working explains the mechanism properly, and what does and does not fix it.
The fix is not to give up the cable. The volume lives on the Sonos, and the Sonos is on your network whether the audio arrives that way or not. Optically catches volume up, volume down and mute, and asks the speaker directly over the network — while the sound keeps travelling down the wire, untouched. You get the timing of the cable and the volume keys of AirPlay at once.
To be clear about what that is worth: if you are on AirPlay today and happy, you do not need it. Your keys already work. Optically can also drive a Sonos you reach over AirPlay, and switch your Mac’s output to it from the menu bar, but that is a convenience rather than a fix for anything.
Common questions
Can I reduce the AirPlay delay?
Not meaningfully. The buffer exists so that a variable network does not become an audible dropout, and it is not exposed as a setting on the Mac or on the speaker. A stronger access point makes the connection more reliable; it does not make the buffer smaller.
My Mac has no optical port. What do I need?
Apple dropped the combined headphone and optical jack years ago, so on most current Macs the output has to be added — either a Thunderbolt dock that lists optical or S/PDIF among its ports, or a small USB audio interface that has one. Which Sonos speakers can take an optical cable?
The Ray, the Playbar and the Playbase have a built-in optical input. An HDMI-only soundbar needs Sonos’s Optical Audio Adapter between the cable and the speaker — a Beam ships with one, and for other models it is a separate purchase. The Ray setup guide goes through the wiring for the common case.
