Refunds

Last updated August 2026

30 days, no questions. If Optically is not what you wanted, press the refund button on your license page — or tell us from the address you bought with — and we will refund you in full. You do not have to tell us why, though it helps us if you do.

How to ask

  • Do it yourself, right now: find your license with the email you bought with, and press Refund me in full. That is the whole process — no form, no reason, no waiting for a person.
  • Or email us / use the contact form and choose “Refund request” — the same refund, with a human in the loop. We aim to answer within two working days.

Either way the refund goes back to the card you paid with, through Stripe. Your bank usually takes another five to ten days to show it.

Why we can be relaxed about this

There is a 14-day free trial with no card and nothing to sign up for, so almost nobody should ever need this page. If you paid and it turned out not to work for your setup, that is our problem to fix, not yours to argue about.

What happens to your license

A license refunded in full is withdrawn. We mark it refunded, free its seats, stop any further Macs being added to it, and issue a signed withdrawal that Optically honours the next time that Mac checks in — at which point it stops redirecting the volume keys and tells you why.

Proportionality cuts the other way too, in your favor. A partial refund — say, a few dollars back as a goodwill gesture — does not touch your license at all. Refunding extra Macs you added later takes back exactly those seats and leaves the license you originally bought working. And if a refund fails at the bank after we have acted on it, whatever was withdrawn is restored automatically — nobody ends up with no money and no license.

Two things worth being straight about. Your Mac is not reached into and switched off remotely; it withdraws itself when it next hears from us, so nothing happens the instant you get your money back. And because Optically deliberately keeps working when our server is unreachable — that is what protects everyone else from our outages — a machine that never connects again will not hear the withdrawal. We would rather that hole existed than have your app stop working because our hosting had a bad afternoon.

Your legal rights

If you are a consumer in the UK or EU you have a statutory right to cancel a digital purchase within 14 days. Our 30-day policy is offered in addition to that right and does not replace or limit it. Nothing on this page affects any statutory right you have.

Chargebacks

Please write to us before disputing a charge with your bank. A chargeback on a $10 sale costs more than the sale, takes months, and gets you your money slower than an email to us would. Ask us first; we would rather refund you than argue with your bank.
